  • A Chilean Firebush provides the fore ground for this shot.
  • Calving is a continuous process as ice fall from the glacier into the lake. The sound is unmistakable.
  • A panoramic shot. The glacier advances down the valley and completely bisects the lake. At this time of year water flows under and through the ice tongue but some years the flow is obstructed and the upper part of the lake can be several metres higher the the lower. Restoration of flow can be quite abrupt and dramatic.

  • This is the Viedma Glacier at the north end of the park near El Chalten. We took a boat to get there. The landing was quite precarious; I was impressed even after all those years in Newfoundland.
  • This time we got to take a walk on the glacier. This is Mary with her farrier. He is helping her to secure her crampons. The farrier is actually an Argentine guide and highly skilled ice climber. His grandparents immigrated to Argentina from west Cork. His English is perfectly fluent with a west Cork accent.
  • This glacier advances several metres a day and none of these ice features last more than a few days.
  • Mary is waiting for everyone else to get their crampons on.

  • At the half way mark the guides pull out a bottle of Baileys.
  • We drink it cooled with fresh glacier ice.
