Iguazu Falls

Awesome falls on Iguazu River between Argentina and Brazil. This was high water and there were over 300 individual drops over 2.7 k of a 70 m basalt cliff. You saw it before in "The Mission" with Robert de Niro and Jeremy Irons

Wonderful evening light and some Argentine fishermen on their way home.

  • OK; so this was photoshopped; just a bit
  • A quiet stretch of the Iguazu River through the jungle just above the falls.
  • The NEX 7 does an in camera panoramic. I waited unsuccessfully for ages for the people to disappear from the foreground, so eventually I just incorporated them into the composition.

  • One of the other activities in the Iguazu area is a river trip starting at Iguazo City. The vessel is a roomy catamaran; we were disturbed to find that it was a party boat. The first clue was all the folks walking up the gang plank with coolers, crates, drums and other instruments.<br /> <br /> They were however a pretty friendly bunch.
  • Our quest thereafter was to seek out the quietist part of the boat.<br /> <br /> Less than a k. downstream the Iguazu joins the rather larger Parana which marks the border between Argentina and Paraguay as it flows seaward.
  • The river flows through a trench; the valley sides are jungle. The land above is flat and intensively farmed.<br /> <br /> As usual the Indians (First Nations in Canadian English) get the bits no one else wants and poverty in their community is ubiquitous.
  • At the turn round point the boat beached on a Paraguayan sandbank where a group of skinny Indian children gave a presumably traditional chant and dance performance.
  • A small boy just watched and the dog tuned out altogether.
  • Compared to the Canadian First Nations dancing that we have seen it was so meagre and depressing. <br /> <br /> The party people started a collection for the kids and the two who came on board left with quite a pile of bank notes.
  • Returning upstream we were treated to a wonderful "Constable" sky

  • The sun is really low in the sky now; lighting the bridge on the Iguazu between Argentina and Brazil.
